Social Democratic Party, SDP, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of killing democracy by operating a draconian and brutish system in the conduct of election and handling of electoral matters.
The party regretted that APC in collaboration with the INEC, have raped democracy and heightened electoral corruption in the country by deliberately upturning election results in most of the local government council elections so far conducted in the country.
Speaking specifically on the recent LG polls in Adamawa State, the party alleged that in places where it won election, the INEC, acting on the directive of the ruling APC either upturned results or declared election inconclusive.
Citing the case in Lamurde LG where the SDP candidate, National Publicity of the party, Alfa Mohammed said, “The Returning Officer, Mr. Anuhu Emmanuel Abba duly announced results and returned our candidate (Mr. Simon Tompeyo) elected, with result sheet signed, stamped and issued, with all the proceedings capture in a video at our possession.
“However, in a sudden twist, the Electoral Commission in league with the State Government conspired to arm-twist the electorate and robs our party and candidate of hard won victory with the Commission refusing to issue certificate of return to our candidate and proceeded to swear-in the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate who came second in the election.
Similarly, the election in Numan local Government was declared inconclusive because the two wards at stake are the major support base of the SDP in the local government.
”The action of the Adamawa State Government and Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission is too pedestrian, brutish, draconian and amounts not only to a rape on our democracy, but corruption of the highest order,” he said, noting that Tompeyo scored 11, 138, while the APC candidate polled 10, 740.
The party lamented the hypocrisy of the federal government’s change mantra, describing it as most ‘ridiculous, a sham’ and regretted that the crusade of change and fight against corruption ought to have shown sharp contrast with what used to obtain in the past.
The party said it was shocked that the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission, ADSIEC, did not only refuse to issue certificate of returns to its candidate, but fraudulently handed over the mandate freely given by the electorate to the APC candidate by issuing him the certificate of returns.
“This senseless act of the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission and the Adamawa State Government is breeding political tension in Lamurde Local Government Area. It will be most unfortunate if lives are lost on account thereof, as the situation is likely to degenerate.
