Sea pirates yesterday killed four police officers, including one Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, along Abonnema waterways in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Sea piracy has been a problem for travellers along waterways in the Niger Delta, especially Rivers State.
Nigerian Pilot gathered the incident occurred around 10am while the marine policemen were on patrol on the water ways.
It was further gathered that the sea pirates, who came in four speed boats, attacked the gun boat which conveyed five policemen, but one officer was lucky to swim to safety while four died.
A source in Abonnema who spoke to Nigerian Pilot said the sea pirates killed the four police officers and hijacked their gun boat.
He further said that men of the Nigerian Army had moved in to recover the boat and probably apprehend the sea pirates.
When contacted, police spokesman in the state, DSP Ahmad Muhammad confirmed the attack but said details of the incident were still sketchy.
Recall that security operatives recently cracked down on sea pirates in the Cross River and Akwa Ibom water ways, which must have pushed them into the Rivers State water ways.
