COUNCIL of the Association of Nigerian Geographers, ANG, said yesterday that adequate security and other arrangements had been put in place ahead of its 58th annual conference scheduled to hold at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, from 12th-17th of this month. Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the conference, Professor Nasiru Idris who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the activities lined up for the event in Keffi, revealed that the university’s internal security system was collaborating with the police, civil defence and other security agencies to ensure adequate security throughout the week-long event. He revealed that the association would present merit award to five distinguished Nigerians, including the ministers of Niger Delta Affairs, Environment, Pastor Usani Uguru, Alh Ibrahim Jibrin respectively, among others. Idris, who is also the Head of Geography Department, Nasarawa state University, Keffi said that the conference which has as its theme: “Geography, Nation-Building and Environmental Change” is expected to attract over 500 participants within and outside the country. He said that one of the key goals of geography was to help citizens realise their responsibilities for the future of the plant earth. “The Conference is expecting over 500 participants from within and outside the country which we are expecting their arrival from March 12th, 2017 and the opening ceremony will take place on March 13th, 2017 “Under the distinguished chairmanship of the honourable minister of Water Resources and Rural Development, Engr. Sulieman Adamu while the key note address during the opening ceremony will be delivered by Minister of state for Environment, Hon. Ibrahim Jibrin” “There will be plenary sessions after the opening ceremony which will features some important aspect of the conference from senior geographers among others, “he said Idris also said that the conference would feature a secondary school quiz competition to select young geographers that would represent Nigeria at the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in Serbia, Belgrade in 2017. The professor of Environmental Planning and Management said that the last programme of the conference would be field trip and Execution to areas of geographical interest to complement the theories in paper presentations and the practical aspect in to reality.
