Senate Minority Leader and Senate President Contender for the 8th Assembly, Senator George Akume has denied a Newspaper report alleging that he met with the All Progressives Congress, APC Leader, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos to discuss issues over the party’s zoning arrangement of National Assembly positions.
Senator Akume in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mrs. Beckie Orpin said he is not pre-occupied with positions for now but rather conferring with his colleagues on the need to work for the betterment of the lives of the good people of Nigeria and to have a vibrant 8thNational Assembly.
“The attention of the office of the Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume has been drawn to series of newspaper publications particularly that of the Punch newspaper of April 30, 2015 to the effect that Senator Akume met with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos over the zoning of National Assembly positions especially that of the Senate President.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Akume along with other Senators-elect received the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari at the on-going 8thNational Assembly retreat at the International Conference Centre, Abuja in the morning of April 29, 2015. The Senate Minority Leader later held other meetings with his colleagues up to the early hours of Thursday, April 30, 2015. Senator Akume did not meet with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Lagos or anywhere by 3pm, April 29, 2015 as published by the Punch Newspaper.
“The Senate Minority Leader is not pre-occupied with positions for now but rather; he is conferring with his colleagues on the need to work for the betterment of the lives of the good people of Nigeria and to have a vibrant 8thNational Assembly. That notwithstanding, the point has to be made that Nigeria at the moment is in dire need of a National Assembly leadership that is very purposeful, focused and result-oriented; one that is capable of providing a legislative agenda that positively complements that of the Executive”, the statement noted
