Senate yesterday said the 2016 budget will today be laid on the floor for formal legislative action. The Senate will also swear in Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, representing Abia North, who alleged that he contested the rerun election against fraudsters and cheats.
Disclosing this to newsmen in an interview, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Abdulahi Sabi said the laying of the budget before the upper chamber will remove all suspicions and hoopla surrounding the budget as members will ensure its timely passage.
“I want to assure Nigerians that the 2016 budget will be laid in the Senate chamber as promised by the chairman of the appropriation committee.
“With that, the other processes that will take place, we will surely ensure that we meet up with the time as promised. So I want to put to rest any suspicion.
“Tomorrow, we are laying the budget, which tells you that all the work that has to be done is done. Yes, we told you that it should be passed by tomorrow, we will discuss it clause by clause and give it that loud voice to say it’s ready.
“When you set a target, it is to allow you work hard to achieve the target. I think we have done very well to get the budget laid by tomorrow.”
Senator Sabi said the Senate drives the key policies of the government, and assured that the passage of the budget will pave the way for policies that would engender job creation, empowerment of small and medium enterprises among other things.
