Senate, yesterday, called on the federal government to undertake an inventory of Bailey Bridges with particular attention to their year of construction and current status in order to reconstruct them.
They are to invite the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to brief them on a viable plan of action for the reconstruction of all Bailey bridges nationwide
Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who made this known in a motion, said the bridges, developed and used during the second world war, were built in Nigeria during the pre-independence and post–independence era up to a few years after the Nigerian Civil War, to provide temporary crossing for humans and vehicles.
So many of them made from prefabricated metal truss and installed in various parts of Nigeria have either caved in or collapsed due to age and pressure, thereby causing untold hardship to commuters, motorists and other users.
He recalled that recently, the Bailey bridge across Ebenyi River along Ikem-Neke-Ugwoogo Road at Ikem-uno in Isi Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State had collapsed causing untold hardship to the people of the area.
They called on the Federal Road Maintenance Authority, FERMA, to urgently reconstruct the collapsed bridge, as well as other collapsed ones across the country.
