The government of Akwa Ibom State, owners of reigning Federation Cup winners, Akwa United FC of Uyo is set to further ring changes at the club.
Following the club’s ouster from the CAF Confederation Cup in Uyo a fortnight ago, Governor Udom Emmanuel swiftly dissolved the board and management of Akwa United led by Mr. Nse Ubeh, and its place appointed renowned CAF/FIFA Match Commissioner, Paul Bassey.
Now the sports commissioner, Sir Monday Ukoh has dropped the biggest hint that Bassey’s appointment which has drawn applause across the state will go beyond the three months the government initially intended.
“The status of Akwa United at the moment requires someone who knows the politics of the game and has been in the system very well. I don’t see anyone amongst the contemporary people that schemed for the position that can beat Paul Bassey’s record. This is why we went for Mr Bassey. We believe his wealth of experience will add value to the team,” said Commissioner Ukoh, during a media chat in Uyo during the week.
Dependable sources have told Nigerian Pilot Sports that fans and supporters of the team should brace up for some more changes in the team.
“People will get the shock of their life in the next few days, those who see themselves as the untouchables in the management may be affected,’’ said a source from Uyo on Tuesday.
