• Promised each of them VP in 2019

INSPITE of earlier reports on the fading
Senator Modu Sheriff saga while he held
sway as national chairman of the main
opposition party, Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, Nigerian Pilot can confirm that
the embattled former leader of the party
“played on the greed” of some PDP elders
including serving and former governors to
get the initial nod he had to remain PDP
chairman against mounting opposition
by former ministers of the party and other
stakeholders.
It could be recalled that penultimate
Saturday, ahead of the botched national
convention of the PDP, governors on the
platform of the party reportedly dumped
Sheriff as the national chairman of the
party.
It was learnt that the governors, serving
and erstwhile opted to take the action
following revelation that he had promised
no fewer than three state governors
vice presidential ticket should each
rally support for his candidacy as PDP
chairman meanwhile.
According to a source who was inside
a meeting of the governors on the eve of
the convention, : “what Modu Sheriff did
was to play on the greed of the governors.
Some of them are in their second term
while even those still on their first term in
office also fell for his carroty very easily
and accepted to work for him ahead the
Port Harcourt convention.”
The source added: “ you know Modu
Sheriff is a very smart politician. All
the while he was travelling round the
country in the name of consultations
and reconciling aggrieved members of
the party, he was throwing up the carrot
and they were grabbing it with both
hands. Indeed they worked for him. But
the harder they tried, the more other
stakeholders resisted the bid. Matters
came to a head when the governors
with conflicting reports from their bases
decided to meet to resolve the matter
so as to enter the convention with one
voice.”
“At that meeting, we told each other the
home truth and asked ourselves what the
problem really was even when majority
stakeholders are not with us on the same
page. One governor was the first to speak
about the offer of VP position to him in
2019. Before long, others said the same
thing. That was when we realised that we
were being taken for a ride. So we threw
up the court ruling stopping him and
others from partaking in the election and
you know the rest,” said a former state
governor who privy to the meeting and all
that took place.
Nigerian Pilot learnt that Sheriff’s plan
was to remain as PDP chairman till the
countdown to 2019 elections when in
another convention, he would exercise
his right not to rerun as the Party’s
presidential slot has been zoned to the
North. He would then go for it while the
chairmanship goes down south.
According to media reports, Governors
Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, Ifeanyi
Ugwuanyi, Enugu, Dave Umahi, Ebonyi
and Ayo Fayose, Ekiti were the four PDP
leaders Sheriff allegedly offered the VP
slot ahead 2019 when he expectedly would
get the party’s ticket to run the presidential
election.
Though Sheriff claims the governors
betrayed him and he remains the party’s
chairman, former governor of Kaduna
state, Ahmed Makarfi has been appointed
by the leaders to run the affairs of PDP till
a fresh national convention would hold in
another 90 days.
