Pierre Mbonimpa, a well-known Burundian human rights activist, was departing on Sunday for Belgium to seek medical treatment for wounds suffered in a drive by shooting, his family has said.
Unknown gunmen on motorcycles shot and injured the activist on Monday.
Mbonimpa, who leads Burundi’s Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detained Persons, was one of the main organisers of the protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office.
Protesters argued that Nkurunziza’s candidacy violated limits enshrined in the constitution and the 2000 Arusha agreement, which ended a 12-year civil war in 2005.
The attack on Mbonimpa is under investigation, Attorney General Valentin Bagorikunda said in a statement. (dpa/NAN)
