In its renewed effort to tackle educational deficiency, Sokoto is to establish a first female University in the state.
This was revealed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who announced the decision at the launching of Northern Education Initiatives plus project, sponsored by USAID at the main hall of the Presidential Villa Lodge in Sokoto.
He said the idea came up through his palace in order to train female students to address maternal health care delivery in the North and country at large.
“We are ready to partner with all strata of people both at state and international level to work towards this dream of establishing female University which is purely female. We are on top of gear toward the project and we are also in contact with National Universities Commission, NUC in Abuja. In fact the project would take off soon,” he assured
He said Sokoto sate is working in partnership with Bill Gate Foundation towards the said dream, and was optimistic that although nothing concrete was on the ground toward the establishment of the university yet, the project has come to stay.
Earlier, the representative of USAID in Nigeria, said that people of the North were desirous to send their wards to school, and with the opportunity today, he assured that USAID is investing huge developmental funds in the Northern Education Initiative plus project.
Deputy Governor, Ahmed Aliyu said the present administration has taken urgent step in addressing major challenges which necessitated the state of emergency in the education sector declared by the state.
He further revealed that already plans were on top gear towards achieving the said dream even as teachers’ incentives, infrastructure and one million pupil target is one area of priority for now.
Several pupils were awarded scholarships by the USAID and the Sultan of Sokoto who advocated for capital punishment for any parent that withdraws his child from school in the state.
He told the participants that his palace would not take it lightly with parents that breached the rule, maintaining that government is working to give the less privileged sound education.
It would be recalled that Sokoto State few weeks ago, declared a state of emergency in the education sector in the state.
