A non governmental organization, the League of Young African Leaders, LOYAL, has said that the South East would not accept any position less than the speakership of the House of Representatives in the coming 8th assembly.
In a statement issued yesterday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, President of the group, Mr. Francis Ndimkoha, insisted that the speakership position must be zoned to the South East.
Ndimkoha maintained that it would be unfair if the South East is not accommodated in the top five positions in the incoming administration.
He stated, “it has become imperative to raise our voice to the demand for speakership position to be zoned to the South East in exchange for the position of the Senate President which was originally agreed upon.
“Our attention has been drawn to the argument that Speakership of the House of Representatives should be zoned to any other part of the country other than the South East due to the limited number of House members from the zone and the seemingly poor outing of the APC in the South East.
“The proponents of this argument failed to acknowledge the fact that has been admitted even by Governor Shettima of Borno State, that the South East stoutly resisted the rigging machinery of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), thereby making it impossible for them to cook up results, with figures running into millions, the result of which would have made the victory of Gen. Buhari impossible.
“The South East which used to be a PDP stronghold deserves to be rewarded with the number five position in the country, in appreciation of its resistance to the plot of the PDP.”
Ndimkoha dismissed the argument that the will lose the seat because of not winning massively in national elections does not diminish the courage of South East leaders like Governor Rochas Okorocha, Senator Chris Ngige and Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, among others, who withstood the heavily militarised election to see Buhari through.
It will be recalled that in 2011, Hon Akande-Adeola Mulikat, the present House Leader, representing, Ogbomosho North,South/Orire Federal Constituency in Oyo State was slated to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a result of the failure of Hon. Dimeji Bankole to return to the House.
Hon. Mulikat was chosen, owing to the fact that the PDP had zoned Speakership of the House to South West, in spite of the glaring defeat the party suffered in the South West in the hands of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (A.C.N), which swept the polls in that zone.
