A lawmaker eyeing the seat of speaker in the House of Representatives, Honourable Yussuf Suleiman Lasun has dropped his ambition to support the candidacy of the House minority leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Nigerian Pilot recalls that last week, two other speakership candidates – Hon Tahir Monguno and Hon Pally Iriase – agreed to step down for Gbajabiamila.
It was even rumoured that Lasun had earlier agreed to run a joint ticket with Hon. Yakubu Dogara for the speaker and deputy speaker positions respectively.
In a press statement, Lasun said that after he had declared his intention to run for the office of the speaker, he went round to consult with relevant stakeholders.
He, however, said since the leadership of the APC in the South-West had settled for Gbajabiamila, he would now support his candidacy.
The lawmaker assured that he would work closely with the minority leader to actualise his speakership ambition.
According to him, “I have gone round to engage individual members and groups in order to realize this ambition.
“But recent events have shown that the party leaders, particularly from the South-West, have decided on the candidacy of Hon Femi Gbajabiamila to run for the position of the speaker.
“As a loyal party man, I cannot do otherwise. I, Hon Yusuf Suleiman Lasun, therefore support the candidacy of Hon Gbajabiamila.
“I also promise to work assiduously in the coming days for the realisation of this objective.
“It is there for all to see how he has articulately and doggedly shepherd the opposition over the years.
“It is also to his credit that a cohesive and strong opposition was later expanded as members of other parties with progressive inclination joined the APC in the House.
“His experience and ability to coordinate the opposition has prepared him well for the leadership of the 8th House of Assembly.”
