Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon Adbulmumin Jibrin, has said that Speaker of the in-coming lower legislative chamber will be elected on merit and not based on zoning arrangement.
Hon Jibrin, stated this yesterday while declaring his interest to vie for the position.
The All Progressives Congress, APC member noted that under his leadership, the House Committee on Finance recorded remarkable achievements in the last four years.
He said his three-point agenda, centres on transparency in discharging the people’s mandate, strengthening the institutions of the House and continuity in legislative business had been designed to ensure improved performance of the legislature.‬
Jibrin revealed that the cost of running the House will not only be cut down, but also be made public.‬
He said Nigerians were more interested in a person who has the requisite knowledge and experience and not the zone the person comes from.
It would be recalled that in the 7th Assembly, the majority party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, zoned the Speakership position to the South West, but Tambuwal, a lawmaker from North West, eventually emerged as the Speaker.
So far, about five lawmakers are nursing the ambition of becoming the Speaker. They are: Hon Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi), Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos), Hon Leo Ogor (PDP, Delta), Hon. Monguno Tahir (APC, Borno) and Adbulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano).
The in-coming leadership of the House may be constituted on June 6.
