FORMER minister of information and national secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mr. Labaran Maku has averred that only a declaration of state of economic and social emergency will save the people of Nasarawa State from hunger and starvation occasioned by what he described as bad governance in the state. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to act fast by liaising with the National Assembly to declare economic and social state of emergency in Nasarawa State to save the innocent citizens of the state from hunger and starvation. Maku, who made the call on Tuesday while addressing newsmen at his residence in Wakama village of Nasarawa- Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, blamed the current economic hardship in the state to mismanagement of the state’s resources by the governor Al-Makura’s administration. He said, “In the last five years, resources of the state amounting to hundreds of billions had been mismanaged by APC administration in the state, with no records and nothing on ground to show. In the last five years, the government had borrowed over N50 billion aside the monthly allocations and Internally Generated Revenue, IGR. “This is not to mention other interventions such as ecological funds, SURE-P monies, N400 million for flood victims since 2012, in addition to the recent bailout given to states by the president. He regretted that the situation
in the state has degenerated to the point that some people, including civil servants have resorted to stealing foodstuff to survive due to nonpayment of workers’ salaries by the state government. He commended the workers on their decision to resist the 50 percent cut in their salaries which he said is their right and not a favour. Maku berated members of the State House of Assembly for suspending six of their colleagues for standing against the illegal appointment of Sole Administrators of local government councils by the governor, calling for immediate recall of the suspended members
