Members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the North East geo-political zone have pleaded with the chairman of the national caretaker committee of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, to step down for the disputed chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, in order to unite the party ahead of 2019.
North East coordinator of the PDP FAN CLUB, Hon Muhammed Arabi Bello, made the plea while speaking to newsmen in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital yesterday.
Mr. Bello urged major stakeholders in the party, especially its Board of Trustees, governors forum and the PDP caretaker committee, to join hands with Sheriff by recognizing him as the authentic Chairman of the party.
According to him, the tenure of the other officers of the party would expire in 2017, while the national chairman, national secretary, national financial secretary and national auditor, who were were elected in 2014, will see their tenure expire in 2019.
Bello, also said that, “in fact as we are talking to you now, we have quite a number of delegates from northeast region which comprises six state and we all agreed that Ali Modu sheriff should continue till 2019”.
He reiterated his earlier call on the party supporters and governor’s forum to respect the two court judgments that declared that sheriff is the authentic national chairman of the PDP, do that peace and unity can reign in the party.
Bello noted that the PDP’s defeat in the last general elections in the hands of APC was an accident, which he said they were prepared to correct before 2019.
