Group known as Arewa Patriotic People’s Assembly, APPA, has warned some elements from northern Nigeria to stop blackmailing the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, over claims that promotions and deployment in the force was lopsided.
The assembly noted that some international media like the Voice of America, VOA, and the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, both the Hausa service, were being used by such unscrupulous elements to portray IGP Arase as playing an ethnic agenda.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja yesterday, president of the assembly, Comrade Isa Tijjani said the consistent airing of the alleged lopsided promotion and deployment, especially by the VOA, was an indication that something was amiss.
Tijjani said, “Though the voice and name of the person interviewed by both media houses were not disclosed, which is right anyway. However, it is important to be reminded that in keeping with the requirements of best practices, especially in a matter that is so touchy and important, adequate verification and investigations should be carried out to avoid generating bad blood in an already polarised country.”
He said following the repeated broadcast of the allegations, the assembly took it open itself to investigate the allegations and found out that they are not true.
“We then invited both the VOA and the BBC and showed them the facts but they never relayed our information, an indication that they are doing somebody’s bidding somewhere. And when their allegations of lopsidedness on the basis of ethnicity could not work, they jumped from the tribe to religion and that in the office of the IGP, there is no Muslim. In our opinion, if the IGP is not performing his duty as the police chief, criticise him but you will not expect me to hate him because he is a Christian. The message is that we will not condone such blackmail.
According to the figures presented to the press, northern Nigeria has 24 commissioners of Police while south has only 13, namely, North-West have 7 CPs, North-East (9), North-Central (8), South-South (4), South-West (7) and South-East (2) in the deployment of command CPs.
In the deployment of Police Mobile Force, PMF, squadron commanders, north has 30 commanders while south has 29 spreading as NE (8), SS (11), SW (11), SE (7), NC (8) and NW (14).
“We challenge anybody who has contrary figures to come up with their facts. Police should be encouraged to have harmony within them so that they will work to protect us. If the police are not on the streets of Nigeria for 24hours, you know what that means. VOA cannot divide this country,” Tijjani proclaimed.
“This statistics clearly falsifies the content of the interview granted by the faceless and disguised person in question on both BBC and VOA. It is our view that elements of mischief should be discarded to give room for our government and its institutions to turn around the country for better and good of all Nigerians. The allegations, as we have found out, are not correct in their entirety. Indeed, our view rather, is that Police management, as currently led by Mr. Solomon Arase, deserves our support and encouragement, to do more to change the negative perception of the police in the country and ensure adequate protection of lives and properties.”
