As leadership crisis continue to rock the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, a group operating under the auspices of PDP Integrity Group, PDP IG, has called on Senator Ali Modu sheriff to immediately stop causing disaffection in the party and give peace a chance.
In a statement in Abuja signed by Secretary General of the group, Hon Rilwanu Abdullah, they declared its support for the Ahmed Muhammed Makarfi-led Caretaker committee, saying the former Kaduna state governor has what it takes to lead the party out of its present predicament.
According to the group, PDP members at home and in the diaspora are not happy with the present impasse in the party.
They declared that majority of the party members, its organs; stakeholders and even Governors want Makarfi as their leader, asking Sheriff to end the hostilities immediately.
PDP Integrity Group advised Sheriff to take the part of honour and stop laying claims to the party leadership immediately as the hand writing is already on the wall that majority are with Makarfi.
Part of the statement read: “As a group within the PDP desirous of making the party a strong opposition and positioning it to take power in 2019, we believe that Former Governor Ahmed Makarfi is the right leader to lead the party out of the woods.
” Even the track record of the two leaders shows that Makarfi has the capacity to lead the PDP than sheriff. During their tenure as Governors any ardent follower of the political situation in the country will recall how Makarfi settled the persistent crisis in Kaduna State and today peace has returned.
“But on the other hand after eight years as Governor of Borno state, every Nigerian and even in the international community know that Borno has been a war zone and only successive administrations are trying their best to bring about peace.
“To show that the people want Makarfi and are behind him, even when Sheriff sent thugs to the party Secretariat, they were overwhelmed by those that believe in the leadership qualities of the former Kaduna Governor and handed over the keys to the Board of trustees of the party to show that they believe in the rule of law and have the interest of the party at heart.
“Sheriff should respect himself as the handwriting is already on the wall that he is not accepted as the Chairman of the party. Instead of going around disgracing himself and causing confusion in the party he should face his invitation by the EFCC and clear his name,” the statement said.
