Stop Erecting Structures on Waterways - DG NEMA plead to Nigerians

Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji, Mustapha Maihajja has appealed to Nigerians to stop erecting structures on waterways to overcome lost of lives and properties during the rainy season.

Maihajja spoke yesterday at the distribution of relief materials to victims of Jibia flood in Katsina State.

The relief materials include; beans, maize items and building materials.

Maihajja who was represented by NEMA North West Zone coordinator Mr. Ishaya Chinoko explained that states experienced yearly flood diseases due to erection of structures on waterways and close to dams.

He lamented that the situation led to the death of innocent people and loss of farm produce and properties.

Maihajja explained that NEMA is collaborating with State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to minimize disasters through massive enlightenment campaigns.

He said the materials distributed to the flood victims of Jibia was not the first time, saying NEMA provided them with similar relief materials in July this year.

Earlier, Executive Secretary of SEMA, Haruna Rigoji announced the closure of the IDP camp and the release of N1 million as assistance to the victims to acquire houses on rent.

Rigoji said the measure is to encourage the flood victims to re-integrate with their families instead of long staying at the camp.

He commended NEMA for the assistance to the victims and urged them to make good use of the relief materials.
