According to reports by civilian
vigilantes helping troops in
the fight against Boko Haram
in North-East Nigeria, the
Maiduguri bombing happened
at the Jimtilo checkpoint at about
12:10pm, causing casualties.
A civilian JTF member at the
scene said that after passengers
had left the bus, the driver drove
forward to another inspection
point at the Jimtilo checkpoint in
the southwest of the city where
he detonated the bomb. Three
civilians were injured.
On Cameroun bombing, a
dozen civilians and a Chadian
soldier were killed in two suicide
attacks by suspected Boko
Haram late on Sunday.
A senior Camerounian military
officer, asking not to be named,
confirmed that the first explosion
went off inside a bar near a
Cameroon Special Forces (BIR)
camp just after sundown as many
were breaking the Ramadan
fast, while the second explosion
followed as soldiers approached
the bar.
L’Oeil du Sahel, a newspaper in
northern Cameroon, said the two
attackers wore burqas.
Islamist group Boko Haram,
which launched an insurgency six years ago to carve out an emirate
in northeast Nigeria, has also
stepped up attacks in neighbouring
Chad, Cameroon and Niger in
recent months.
The group is suspected of
launching a similar attack in Chad’s
capital, about 60 km (37 miles) east
of Fotokol, on Saturday. A man
dressed in a woman’s burqa blew
himself up in the main market
killing 15 people.
At the time of filing this report, no
immediate claim for the attack by
the terrorists.
Since President Muhammadu
Buhari’s inauguration at the end of
May, there has been a sharp rise in
the number of raids and bombings
across the country, especially in
Attacks in neighbouring Chad,
including on the capital N’Djamena,
have also been on the rise.
Buhari and his regional allies
are setting up the headquarters of
a multinational joint task force in
Chad’s capital dedicated to dealing
with the six-year old insurgency.
Chadian troops played a major role
in pushing the group out of key
Nigerian towns earlier this year.
According to monitoring by the
SITE Intelligence Group, Boko
Haram claimed responsibility on a
Twitter feed for suicide bombings
on the police headquarters in
Chad’s capital in June and a recent
such attack in Maiduguri.
