The Sports Writers Association of  Nigeria (SWAN) has declared three days of national mourning  in honour of  its  late Vice President  for the South South Zone, Mr Eddie Bekom, who  died on  Sunday.

The Nigerian Pilot reports that Bekom  died  following  injuries  he sustained  after a  gas explosion.

The Secretary General of the association, Olawale Alabi, said in a statement  on Monday in Abuja that  the mourning period would begin  on Tuesday, with members and sympathisers wearing  black clothes or  having  a piece of black material pinned on their shirt pockets.

“Bekom had earlier lost his wife and daughter, while his remaining children are still on danger list following the gas explosion which occurred at their residence in Ikom, Cross River State.

“His death is a national tragedy, and given what has befallen his entire family, we can only pray the Almighty God to take control of the situation we have at hand.

“The Bekom family’s case is an unfortunate situation that had called for all hands to be on deck for all kinds of support,” the statement said.

The association, however,  thanked  those that responded as quickly as possible  to  the challenge of  supporting  the family.

“ It is now a greater challenge to us to ensure that those still receiving treatment at the hospital in Abakaliki should not lack anything in the area of material and financial support for treatment and rehabilitation,’’  the statement  said.

The association  also appealed to the  Cross River governor,  Ben Ayade,  to spare nothing in  ensuring  that the remaining members of the family were given the best treatment anywhere in the world.
