It was not a moment of agony and sorrow when the eagle’s eye of Anambra State Police Command caught with sixty-five- year- old Mrs. Grace Offor, who became the sacrificial lamb for the sins of her son, Obinna Offor, that claimed to be a gospel musician and prayer warrior.
Mrs. Grace was arrested sequel to a foiled kidnap and robbery attempt in Onitsha by the hoodlums who engaged members of state police command in a gun battle that claimed four lives recently.
The police alleged that the woman took it as her responsibility to cook for her son and his gang of kidnappers in her house. He son hid under the clock of an evangelist.
She was paraded by the police alongside 12 others involved in killing the police officer in charge of state anti-robbery squad in Onitsha OC-SARS Emma Ochobi in 2012.
During the exercise, the state police commissioner, Hosea Hassan Karma equally displayed the dead bodies of those who engaged his men in a shoot-out at Asaba in Delta State.
He said some guns were sighted in their vehicle following a tip off from the public to the police who swooped into action that produced the result, while he said two members of the gang escaped with bullet wounds.
Karma also commended Anambra State government for support against crime in the state.
He also, gave kudos to the men of, SARS, for their gallantry especially, the commander of the group in the state, James Nwafor, a chief superintendent of police, CSP, for standing up when it mattered most.
The police boss repeated his warning to criminals to move away from Anambra State, describing the state as a no go area for them.
In her confession at the SARS office in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of the state, Madam Offor, said she never knew her son was a kidnapper, adding that he was a musician and prayer warrior.
However, she confirmed that her son and his accomplice kidnapped one Ahanaonu Jacinta with her Uncle in a sports utility vehicle, SUV, at 3-3 Nkwelle Ezunaka and brought them to her house at Arondizuogu in Imo State. Even at that, she failed to admit that she was the cook of the alleged kidnappers as alleged by the police.
Furthermore, she confirmed that the suspects were friends to her son as he claimed, even though she never knew their “modus operandi” having seen them together, discussing together and taking bath together, which she presumed that signified intimate friendship.
According to her, “I was sick and never cooked for them, I had only returned from the hospital before the police invaded the compound accusing my son of being the gang leader of kidnapping gang.
“My son is a musician and a prayer warrior and I was surprised he could engage in such a nasty deal to the extent of being a kidnapper, I am amazed and dumb -founded by this,” Offor said.
Apart from the woman and the death of the four persons, the police also arrested 18-year-old Chukwujekwu Oranezu from Eziagu-Umueleke village in Orumba south council area for killing a multimillionaire called Remi with pestle and made away with his N500, 000 cash.
Other four persons were equally arrested for illegal possession of dynamites capable of blowing up banks.
But the suspects claimed that they were using it for blowing rocks at Nkwelle Ezunaka, adding that they were not the people selling it.
Items recovered include, two-AK riffles, three magazines, 49 rounds of live ammunition, seven rolls of dynamite explosives with other components as well as N70, 000, part of the ransom.
