Ekiti State government has said it was set for a grand celebration of the annual Teachers’ Day in the state, saying it remained committed to a better teaching profession.
In a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday by the chief press secretary to the governor, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, the government stated its belief in motivating the workforce for improved performance and better results.
Adelusi stressed that in line with the policy of Governor Ayo Fayose, everything humanly possible would be done to encourage teachers and workers generally in the state, as they were the engine room of the government.
“This year’s Teachers Day in Ekiti is going to be great and it will be bringing back the good old days when teachers were celebrated in the state.
“Recall that the last time teachers in Ekiti say they had had a good celebration of their day was in 2006, during the first term of Governor Ayo Fayose. Then, the governor created the position of tutors-general, one for each senatorial district.
“Since that time, successive administrations have not celebrated them.
“They even had a situation when an administration cancelled their day and threatened them with all manners of examinations to terminate their appointments.
“Governor Fayose knows that an untrained soul is a danger to himself and the society; and those helping us to train our children and helping to mould our future must not be treated with contempt. A lot of incentives will be given the teachers.
“The best teacher in primary and secondary schools will be chosen, as well as the novel position of Headmaster-general for primary school. Each of them will go home with brand new car.
“The administration of Governor Ayo Fayose is doing all these because we know the positive impact they will have on education in the state.
“When the Fayose administration organised the first Education Summit in 2003 and adequately motivated the teachers, the difference was clear.
“Ekiti State moved from 35th position in public examinations conducted by WAEC and NECO to number seven. We later became number one in the South-West and we were aiming for the top position in the federation before the illegal removal of the governor,” he said.
Adelusi urged all teachers and lovers of teachers to troop out in large number to the stadium for the occasion.
