Minister of Sports and Youths Development, Solomon Dalung has dispelled fears that team Nigeria would likely fail to bag any medal when this year’s Olympic Games gets underway in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Dalung who was responding to question put across to him by Nigerian Pilot Sports in Abuja said it would amount to existing injustice should anyone allege that no meaning preparation is in place for athletes expected to represent the country in Rio.
In recent times, there have been fears in various quarters that the snail-pace at which training program has been, the outcome of 2016 may not be far from what happened in 2012 London Olympic Games. Team Nigeria returned home empty handed after last Olympics.
But Dalung who is now fully in charge of the country’s sporting activities quipped: “It will not be correct for anybody to say preparations are not ongoing. Olympic is four years event and preparations have been on for the past four years.
“What is critical is that we are now in final face preparation where we need to mop up and re-strategize, test our strength and know our capacity to contain the challenges ahead of us.
“The preparation is ongoing but these preparations are not display like shoes in the market for anybody to buy. Asking me to account for something when I was not there is a definition of injustice.
“This type of question would have gone to those who mismanaged our fortune in the last outing. However, we have some lessons to learn from their behaviour. From this experience, we have learnt where the lapses were and improved on them and I think that Nigeria in Rio will go far, far better than it’s expected.”
Talking about friction within some federations that are Olympic-bound, the sports minister enthused “As far as I’m concerned, it’s a display of immaturity and over exaggeration of interest; if it’s not, we have a very serious issue ahead of us as a country which is Olympic, every other federations that is patriotic should be able to lie-low all these differences and work for the victory of Nigeria first not their personal interest of becoming president or becoming secretary or leader.
“I have appeal to all the federations who are on war path that in the interest of this country they should come together and let us work for the victory of Nigeria in Rio.”
