GOVERNOR Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State yesterday described the Tiv community of the state as great contributor to the socio-economic and political development of the state.
The governor made the assertion while speaking at the burial ceremony of a first republic House of Representatives member from the state, late Athanasius Ityo in Kalachi community of Keana Local Government Area of the state.
Represented by the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barr. Gabriel Akaaka, the governor pointed out that the appointment of many Tiv sons and daughters into key positions in his government was in recognition of the firm support of the Tiv community gave to his administration and urged them to continue to live in peace with one another for the interest of peace and tranquillity.
“You (Tiv) are great people. Your immense contributions to the overall development of our dear state cannot be over emphacised and I therefore urge you to continue to support my administration so as to enable government deliver more dividends of democracy to your communities.”
The governor pointed out that the massive rural roads being constructed by his administration, especially in the southern senatorial district of the state, was particularly aimed at enhancing transportation of farm produce from Tiv villages.
He described the late former lawmaker as a detribalised Nigerian who distinguished himself in the business of lawmaking during his days and urged the bereaved family and entire Tiv community to accept his death as an act of God.
In a remark, president, Tiv Development Association in the state, Engr. Moses Utondu who described the late Ityo as the only Tiv man that had held the highest elective position in the history of the Tiv community of the state, enjoined the people to take solace in God, just as he challenged the Tiv people to embrace settlement areas to enhance development in their areas.
