President, Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria, TOPREC, Prof. Layi Egunjobi has called on the federal government to embrace physical planning in order to ensure rapid development of the country.
Prof. Egunjobi made the call at the 28th induction and award of the council in Abuja recently.
Egunjobi said town planning was critical as it promotes sustainable urban environment and development, adding that planning had a control mechanism on what to do and what not to do according to planning standard.
He said although the number of qualified planners was on the increase in Nigeria, physical planning had not been embraced by government over the years, saying that this had hindered rapid development of the country.
To his colleagues he said, “If you are a licensed planner of a particular agency, you are expected to exhibit the good ethics of the profession for nation building.”
According to him, “We started with a small number of town planners and today, we have about three hundred members licensed.”
Egunjobi called on the members to be responsible and upright to their duties for the development of the nation.
“When planners indulge in corrupt practices, they close their eyes to the wrong things being done and thereby turn the environment to shambles. I want to call on planners to live according to the code of ethics of the profession” he added.
An inductee, Mrs Hanatu Yakwo said the ceremony was a remarkable moment for her and her family stating that she was happy because her dream becomes true as she was qualified as town planner.
Another inductee, Mr Aremu Sunday said the induction had confirmed him as a qualified town planner to contribute his quota to nation building.
“I can now practice my profession freely without fear. I assure Nigerians that I will do my best in this profession.”
