A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in the FCT on Wednesday sentenced a trader, Awalu Suleman, 24, to one month in prison for stealing two chickens.
The convict, of no fixed address, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of joint act and theft.
The Judge, Mr Garba Ogbede, however, gave Suleman an option to pay a fine of N5, 000.
Ogbede warned the convict to stay away from crime.
Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs Ndidi Ukaoha, told the court that one Abubakar Gandi of Rugar Fulani community in Abuja reported the matter at the Lugbe Police Station on March 22.
Ukaoha told court that the convict and three other people, now at large, jointly stole the complainant’s chickens.
She said that the convict stole the two chickens and slaughtered them.
Ukaoha said that during police investigation, the convict confessed to committing the crime.
The prosecuting counsel said that the offence contravened Sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
Suleman, who had pleaded guilty to the charges, begged the court for leniency.
“I’m so sorry my lord for what I did. I will not do it again,’’ he pleaded.
Ukaoha had urged court to invoke Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015 on summary trial in dealing with the convict. (NAN)
