Cross River State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Calabar, yesterday, dismissed a petition filed by Labour Party, LP governorship candidate, Mr. Fidelis Ugbo challenging the emergence of Governor Ben Ayade.
Mr. Ugbo had challenged the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate claiming the election was flawed.
The matter was however dismissed following notice of withdrawal filed before the tribunal by the petitioner.
The tribunal chairman, Justice Mohammed Aliyu Mayaki, in his ruling granted the request of the petitioner and dismissed the matter accordingly.
Barrister Roland Otaru, SAN, who appeared alongside other lawyers for the Governor Ayade’s lead counsel told journalist after the Tribunal’s ruling that that the withdrawal of the matter by the petitioner ‘is a positive development and we are very happy.
He commended the Labour Party governorship candidate for deciding to discontinue with the matter, describing him as a ‘statesman.’
Mr. Alphonsus Eba also on the governor’s legal team also commended Mr. Ugbo for the courage, describing his action as ‘victory for democracy.’
He, however, denied allegations that the Labour Party candidate was ‘pressured’ to withdraw the matter, describing the allegations was “false and unfounded.”
The All Progressives Congress, APC, had also withdrawn its petition against Governor Ayade.
