No fewer than 500 members of the School Based Management Committee, SBMC, were trained by the state Universal Basic Education Board, ZUBEB, in collaboration with Civil Society Action Coalition for Education for All, CSACEFA, in the 14 local councils of Zamfara State.
The essence of SBMC, constituted in every primary school in the state, is to partner with state education authorities for the management, maintenance and inspection of educational and structural development of primary schools located in their respective localities.
The three-day capacity training was aimed at impacting on the SBMC members the relevant knowledge and strategies for full participation in the teaching and learning process.
In his speech at the flag-off ceremony, the acting Executive Chairman, ZSUBEB, Alhaji Sidi Halliru, noted that the SBMC was set up to replace the Parents, Teachers, Association, PTA, considering its wider scope and effectiveness in the improvement of primary education.
He said PTA was an association with a limited scope involving only teachers and parents, while the SBMC entails the participation of all community members whether one has a child in the school or not.
In his address, the Director, Social Mobilisation, ZUBEB, Alhaji Aminu Musa Kanoma, stated that with the formation of SBMC, the community will fully participate in monitoring school activities and report lapses to education authorities, and will also be obliged to be responsible for the maintenance of physical structures of their community primary schools.
