The new governor of Enugu State, Chief Lawrence Ifanyi Ugwuanyi, has promised to operate a knowledge-driven economy in the state, contrary to dependence on monthly revenue from the federation accounts.
According to him, the resource accruing to the state from federation account has grown low.
Delivering his inaugural address to his people, after his oath of office administered by Justice Innocent Umezurike, Ugwuanyi said since, “knowledge-driven and not oil driven economies that rule the world, this is another great opportunity for Enugu State and indeed Nigeria to look in-wards and harness those potentials which free oil money has blinded us from exploiting.”
Ugwuanyi went further to say that the dwindling oil resources “is an opportunity to live to our full potentials and discard the feeding-bottle federalism syndrome.”
The governor also said he believed in the “miracle of five loaves and two fishes” as told in the bible, adding that with wisdom and courage God will help him to successfully navigate the state through the current economic crunch ravaging the land.
Ugwuanyi called for patience and understanding and enjoined others to partner with him  in the full governance of the state.
He called on all to tighten their belts promising that “the belt-tightening will start with government functionaries and businesses” in the state.
“In addition, every revenue-generating agency of government should be ready to remit revenues to fund government development effort”, chief Ugwuanyi subtly warned.
Tax dodgers were also warned that their era has drawn to a close.
“Individuals and corporate entities should henceforth start paying taxes as defaulters will no. Longer be counted among the friends of Enugu State.
Earlier in a short speech former Governor Sullivan Chime asked the people of the state to give the new governor their support to enable him realise his promise of continuing with his own programme.
