We’ll confront Akpabio's "Nazi army" with God's army - A'Ibom PDP

The social media was awash with the story alleging that some gunmen reportedly stormed the home of former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Senate Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday where he was holding a political meeting.

Senator Akpabio’s media aide, Mr. Anietie Ekong was quoted to have raised alarm on social media alleging that there was sporadic shooting by unknown gunmen at Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area; the country home of Senator Akpabio who is also the immediate past governor of the state.

He was quoted to have called on the Divisional Police Officer of Essien Udim Local Government Area and the Akwa Ibom State Police Commissioner to “please urgently intervene.”

“The senator was at home holding political meeting with some APC groups. A retired deputy inspector-general of police, Udom Ekpoudom, was in that meeting. Bishop Samuel Akpan was also there. I was there as an observer. We were in the banquet hall.

“Suddenly, people who were not part of the meeting rushed into the banquet hall, so the senator enquired from them what was going on. Before anybody could explain, we heard gunshots, sporadic shooting, outside.

“The chief detail to the senator put out a radio message to all the policemen and other security men in the compound that they should be at alert, that there is an attack”, Mr. Ekong who claimed he was present in Akpabio’s house during the shooting was quoted to have explained.

Furthermore, Mr. Ekong said Senator Akpabio who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC and resigned his position as the Senate Minority Leader and his guests were held up in the banquet hall of the building, while his security aides repelled the attack and prevented the gunmen from having access to the compound.

Mr. Ekomg was also quoted to have disclosed that the shooting which took place at about 7.30pm on Tuesday lasted for about 15 minutes.

However, in reaction to the reports, the Akwa Ibom state Police Command said there was no such attack on Senator Godswill Akpabio’s country home as claimed by his aide.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Odiko MacDon was quoted to have simply said “that information is false”, explaining that there was an attempted robbery at a filling station about 200 meters away from the Senator’s house.

“Nobody attacked the country home of Senator Godswill Akpabio”, he further explained.

On his part, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Essien Udim Local Government Area corroborated the PPRO’s position that the shooting was at a filling station and not Akpabio’s house.

“There were some policemen on the ground at the filling station, so when the armed robbers started shooting, the policemen there fired back and the robbers ran away,” the DPO was quoted to have said.

He explained that when he learnt of the shooting, he visited the area that night in the company of the Police Area Commander adding that he and his officers stopped by the Senator’s house that night and that the gate was locked.

“We stayed around there till late into the night before we left”, he added.

It would be recalled that since the defection of Akpabio from PDP to APC, there has been political tension in Akwa Ibom state which recently degenerated to verbal war between him and the incumbent governor of the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Senator Akabio had at an event recently declared that he regretted assisting Udom Emmanuel to become the governor of Akwa Ibom state with Emmanuel responding that he would expose Akpabio if he provokes him.
