Unknown gunmen on Thursday night trailed and killed a senior lecturer of the Department of English and Linguistics, Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State, Mr Vincent Eebee.
Eebee was shot dead alongside a student, Priye at Yeghe community, while on his way to Port Harcourt.
A source told our correspondent that the lecturer was trailed from his office to Yeghe.
Acting Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Onengiye Georgewill, who confirmed the death of the lecturer and a female student to journalists in Port Harcourt, said they were together in the office shortly before he left for Port Harcourt.
According to him, the deceased tried to escape when his assailants started shooting at him, but they pursued and shot him severally to ensure that he was dead.
“He was with me in the office and we were just deliberating on what we will do tomorrow (Friday). There was this document that he said he will send to me first thing tomorrow morning.
“On his way home, gunmen followed him until he got to Yeghe where they opened fire on him; he came out of the car and started running towards one primary school. They followed and shot him until they made sure that he was dead. Then, there was a female passenger who was hit by bullets. She did not die immediately; they took her to the hospital, but not too long ago, I got a call that she has been confirmed dead.”
Georgewill stated that he had reported the incident to security agencies. “As soon as I heard the news, I called the area commander, DPO, Bori, DPO, Gokana, and I made a report. Before then, they had already gotten wind of the story and had swung into action. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary,” he added.
