Following a peaceful protest embarked upon by some staff of Enugu South Local Government Council last week over the backlog of six months salary, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi paid an unscheduled visit to the council to see things for himself.
Sources at the council headquarters in Uwani told Nigerian Pilot that Ugwuanyi alongside some government functionaries met with the staff who briefed him on the true position of things.
According to the source, following a tip-off about the unscheduled visit, the Council Chairman, Victor Agbo, rushed to the secretariat to meet with the governor.
Ugwuanyi, who was peeved with what he learnt from the staff of the council, refused to meet with the chairman in his office.
Enugu South is one of the councils in the state owing their staff backlog of salaries. Other councils that are neck deep in staff salary arrears include Udenu and Nsukka Local Government Councils. Some of them have been owing since November last year.
Piqued by this ugly development, the governor recently constituted an 11-man committee headed by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, to investigate why some council chairmen cannot pay their staff among other things.
