Following a peaceful protest embarked upon by some staff of Enugu South Local Government staff last week because they are being owed backlog of salaries running into six months, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi paid an unscheduled visit to the council to see things for himself.
Nigerian Pilot gathered from a good source close to the council headquarters, Uwani that Gov. Ugwuanyi on learning about the demonstration went to the council with some government functionaries without the usual fanfare that herald the movement of the governor and met with the staff who briefed him on the true position of things.
According to the source, following a tip off about the unscheduled visit, the Council Chairman, Hon. Victor Agbo rushed to the council secretariat to meet with the governor.
Gov Ugwuanyi who was peeved by what he learnt from staff of the council before his arrival refused to go with Hon Agbo to his office the source disclosed.
It was gathered that the council boss was seen pacing about while the governor ignored him completely while carrying out his enquiries.
Enugu South, Nigerian Pilot gathered, is one of the councils in Enugu State owing their staff backlog of salaries. Other councils that are neck deep in staff salary arrears include Udenu and Nsukka local government councils. Some of the councils are owing since November last year.
Piqued by this ugly development, Gov Ugwuanyi recently constituted an 11-man committee headed by the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Edward Ubosi to look into the problem of why some council bosses cannot pay their staff among other things.
