The United Nations World Tourism Organisation, UNWTO has threatened to suspend Nigerian based Ikeja Hotel Plc over prolonged non-payment of obligatory contributions to the budget of the organisation.
The UNWTO stated that it will suspend the membership of Ikeja Hotel Plc and other Affiliated Members in 2016, if they did not reached an agreement with the UNWTO Secretary General on a plan for the payment of their arrears to the body.
Ikeja Hotel Plc. is a vertically integrated hotel development and management company with current portfolio consisting of over 5 select service hotels and full service hotels with over 1300 luxurious rooms in major leisure, business and convention markets across Nigeria.
Ikeja Hotels located in Lagos has the structure and capability of developing and operating hotels all across Nigerian cities with Sheraton Lagos, and Abuja in its kitties.
The General Assembly of the UNWTO in Medellin, Colombia also put countries on notice with their membership subject to suspension due to prolonged non-payment of obligatory contributions to the budget of the organisation .
The countries include: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Central African Republic, Chad, Djibouti, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Syrian Arab Republic, Macedonia, Turkmenistan and Vanuatu.
The body listed Chad, Liberia, Syrian Arab Republic as the countries and Affiliated Members that may be suspended in 2016, if they fail to reach an agreement with the UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai on a plan for the payment of their arrears.
Other affiliated members that will also be suspended in 2016 for the same reason include: Al-Tayyar Travel Group, Alternative Business Solutions, AECTE, CIETEC, Chamaleon Strategies Inc., Ecole d’Hotellerie et de Tourisme de la Cemac, Exogays, Federacion de Turismo Del Estado Bolivar, FIJET, Funacion Universitaria los Libertadores, Instituto Marcar Brazil, Pologiuassu, Istria Tourist Board, Jordan Society of Tourist and Travel Agents, Kenya Tourist Board, LAN Airlines, MHRTA (Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association), MTA International Master Tour Alliance, Menaratours Company, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, Palestinian National Tourism Authority, RCM Global Trade SA, Salo International del Turisme a Catalunya, The Sun Channel Tourism Television and United Nations Foundation .
Already, Ikeja Hotel Plc is already embroiled in management crisis as two different factions lay claims to the board as what started as a family squabble has snowballed into the company’s board leading to the removal of the chairman of the company, Mr. Goodie Ibru, by some shareholders.
This was just as the embattled chairman of the hotel, Ibru, had stuck to his gun, insisting that he remained the chairman of the board of directors of the firm as he declared the extraordinary general meeting, EGM, which was held outside the premises of a subsidiary of Ikeja Hotels, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, null and void.
