The police have confirmed the kidnap of a former Nigerian minister of foreign affairs, Bagudu Hirse, and have since cordoned the area where he was abducted.
Aliyu Usman, the Kaduna police spokesperson, confirmed the kidnap to PREMIUM TIMES.
Mr. Hirse was kidnapped on Sunday morning in Kaduna in front of the house of Mamman Daura, a cousin to President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We’ve launched an operation to safely rescue him and bring his abductors to book,” Mr. Usman said.
Mr. Hirse, a Plateau State politician, was said to be on a condolence visit to Mr. Daura when the incident occurred.
Mr. Daura, a cousin of President Buhari, is an in-law to late Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki, who passed on last week at 93.
Mr. Daura’s residence and the whole area has since been cordoned by police officers.
The residence, situated along Inuwa Wada road, Unguwan Rimi GRA, was usually a beehive of activities on weekends. Politicians and well-wishers often gathered there to pay homage and allegedly lobby for positions. Mr. Daura, though not a public official, is said to be one of the most powerful persons in the Buhari administration.

When PREMIUM TIMES visited the house on Sunday at about 6:55 p..m., it had been cordoned by security operatives. No movement was allowed along the road amidst a stop and search operation.
A neighbour to Mr. Daura said the increased security presence was unusual.
“This area is always busy during the weekends, because Mamman Daura is usually around at that time,” he said. “Praise singers and top politicians come and go at interval.”
“This is a highbrow area where big politicians and businessmen reside in Kaduna,” he added.
