The United States has appealed to Nigerians to refrain and not condone violence during and after elections as Kogi and Bayelsa States prepare for their gubernatorial elections.
This appeal,made through a statement by the Public Affairs Section of the US Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria in Abuja yesterday, called on political parties and leaders to work towards sustaining a stable and democratic Nigeria.
“Political parties, elected leaders and candidates for offices have a special obligation to uphold these democratic precepts.”
It also urged voters to refrain from violence, stating that the constitution encouraged citizens to live in unity and harmony.
“The Nigerian Constitution itself states that it is the duty of every citizen to respect the dignity of other citizens and the rights and legitimate interests of citizens to live in unity and harmony.
They also expressed loyalty in working with Nigeria to sustain and strengthen its democratic institutions in years to come.
