federal government in conjunction with other private sector stakeholders has said water has more potentials than oil if government pays more attention to the sustainable management of water resources.
They stated this yesterday during the commemoration of World Water Day in Abuja.
Speaking during the occasion, the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu revealed that Nigeria has an estimated water resources potential of about 375 billion cubic metres that if well harnessed, will help in the diversification of the economy.
“The vast quantities of the nation’s water resources are held in small and large dams that if well utilised will provide affordable hydroelectricity, job creation opportunities, food productivity and in turn improve quality of life.”
He added that water is a cross-cutting resource that impacts several related sectors of human life.
“The impact of water resources is felt in health, agriculture, transportation, hydro-power and sustainable environment,” he stated.
He stressed the need for the development of a sustainable integrated water resources management plan as the ministry intends to increase irrigable land from 70,000hectares to 500,000 hectares in the next 15 years with all the requisite infrastructure.
“It is expected will yield over 500,000 direct jobs across the nation, while its utilization for fish production and farming will yield in excess of one million tons of fish per year.”
In his special presentation titled ‘Potentials in the Water Sector for Sustainable Socio-economic Development,’ Dr. Johnson Adewumi stated that water had more potentials than oil if given more attention.
Adewumi in his introductory speech said water is life, stressing that water goes beyond bottling companies.
He stated that the water sector had the capacity to employ millions of Nigerians in its different sectors.
For her part, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs. Rabi Jimeta said no nation could exist without water; as such, she said there was need for continuous collaboration with agencies in the water sector.
