Stan Wawrinka’s Australian Open campaign came to an end as Milos Raonic overwhelmed the Swiss fourth seed with a stunning display of serve and volley to edge a five-set thriller.
Wawrinka, the 2014 champion here, had fought his way back from two sets down to take the match to a decider but Raonic’s aggression paid off as the Canadian 13th seed won 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 in three hours and 44 minutes.
The result has implications for Andy Murray’s draw as the British No 1 was due to face Wawrinka in the semi-finals if he reaches that stage. Raonic would still provide a tough test but Murray has historically performed well against big servers.
