Four representatives of the Chief of Army Staff confirmed to the Rivers State Governorship Tribunal that contrary to allegations by the Rivers State APC, the Army did not participate in any electoral fraud during the April 11governorship election in four local government areas.
The four local government areas include: Abua/Odual, Ikwerre, Gokana and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.
Those who testified on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff included: Captain Sadiq Abubakar (Abual/Odua); Captain Fred Bala (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni), Isa Al-Makura (Ikwerre) and Captain Jeremiah Salihu (Gokana).
The Rivers State APC governorship candidate, Mr. Dakuku Peterside and the Rivers State APC had alleged in their petition that the Army, Police and other security agencies participated in the alleged rigging of the governorship election in four local government areas.
The soldiers, who were cross examined after they testified on behalf of the Rivers State APC on the instruction of the Chief of Army Staff, noted that they did not unleash violence on the electorate as alleged. They said they merely carried out their security functions.
The cross examination was conducted by counsel to INEC, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), counsel to Governor Nyesom Wike, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN )and Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN ) counsel to the PDP.
The four captains also denied ever seeing the police or any other security agency attacking voters on behalf of the PDP.
The soldiers contradicted the earlier evidence contained in the front loaded petition by the APC.
Though they denied being sent by the Chief of Army Staff to support the APC, they noted that they would not have appeared if not for the specific directive of the Chief of Army Staff.
Testifying further, the four captains denied ever seeing anyone illegally thumb printing ballot papers.
Ordinarily, the soldiers who appeared on Subpoena were not expected to give oral evidence. The tribunal overruled objections raised by the respondents during its attention to the legal requirements.
The Nigerian Army officials under the directive of Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai have explained that in five local governments they acted within the law and did not assist the PDP to rig the said election.
