Katsina State Governor, Honourable Aminu Bello Masari has said that 600,000 out of 1,000,000 pupils listed for enrollment in the 2013/2014 academic year by the past administration in the state are out of school while 400,000 are studying under conditions not conducive for learning.
Governor Masari stated this in his remark at a dinner organised by Bakatsiniya Magazine in his honour in Kaduna at the weekend.
He stated that, education has always remained the pride of the people of Katsina State as many of the past and present leaders of the country schooled in the state, adding that, unfortunately the state’s education system has been neglected for too long and the effect is now visible, explaining that if parents does not give the children the right education they would seek alternative training for themselves, which is the genesis of the present security challenges bedeviling the nation today.
The Katsina state governor further added that, agriculture in the past used to be the bedrock of the state’s economy as 70 percent of the people depended on it. He however decried past policies that made it difficult for farmers to get fertilizers whereas shy lock dealers exploited the farmers on the commodity.
He assured that the people of the state that his administration has taken inventory of farmers in the state to ascertain their actual numbers in order to address their problems effectively.
“In line with our campaign promises to the people of Katsina state we are making all monies coming to the state and how it is spent public, and everybody is free to challenge us if he or she is not satisfied with the way we are spending the people’s money.
“We are also warning that the era of a Permanent Secretary alone taking N9.5 billion money in cash from the Ministry is over. The set back in the state is as a result of such corrupt practices but the good news is that we are going to use all legal means to recover all stolen monies from those involved,” he said.
The Chairman of the occasion, Engr Kabir Abdullahi said the wind of change blowing across the nation is visible in Katsina state, assuring that the government led Hon Aminu Bello Masari will not disappoint the people of the state.
He however solicited for support from the good people of the state so that the good days can return back to the state.
In the own remarks, the National Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, North West Zone, Comrade Yusuf Idris, commended the Katsina state governor for working in line with his campaign promises, especially the setting up of various committees that will study the actual problems of the state, adding, “The report of the Committees will serve as guide to the government and we as journalists will work with the government of Katsina State to make things work for good.”
