THE LONG-DRAWN battle
between the former National
Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Senator Ali
Modu Sheriff and members
of the National Caretaker
Committee appointed by
the National Convention
of the party came to an end
on Wednesday when the
Supreme Court sacked the
former governor of Borno
State and put an end to the
leadership crisis rocking the
party.
From every indication the
camp of Modu Sheriff never
anticipated the Supreme Court
judgment will go the way
it went as they had already
printed congratulatory
banners which they hung
at PDP national secretariat
while the judgment was being
read at the Supreme Court.
They hurriedly removed
the congratulatory banners
and disappeared from the
secretariat when news broke
that Modu Sheriff has been
sent packing.
The shock with which they
received the report was aptly
captured in the statement
issued by Spokesman of the
Sheriff faction, Hon Bernard
Mikko 24 hours after the apex
court ended the leadership
tussle.
The statement read:
“We received with shock
the 12th July judgement
of the Supreme Court on
the leadership of Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP).
“Though we still await the
full written judgement of the
highest court from our lawyers
who will fully brief us on
the details of the judgement;
in the interim, we ask all
members and supporters to
remain steadfast in prayers
for Nigeria.
“Meanwhile, we continue
with our avowed demands
that the party must be given
back to the owners at the
grassroots to always elect their party officials and those to
contest elections for them at all
levels. Internal democracy must
be institutionalized in the party.
Discreet investigation by our
correspondents revealed that
some of the PDP chieftains that
secretly nudged Modu Sheriff
to continue with the battle have
been plating double game as
they also wine with members
of the Ahmed Makarfi-led
National Caretaker Committee
in the day.
Some chieftains of the PDP
like Senator Kashamu Buruji,
who is battling to stall possible
extradiction to the United
States of America over drugreleted
offense; Dr. Cairo
Ojougboh who lost his position
as National Vice Chairman
(South South) during the Port
Harcourt convention; Senator
Hope Uzodinma, Hon Ahmed
Gulak and the former National
Secretary, Prof Adewale
Oladipo are not pretentious of
their support for Modu Sheriff
and openly identified with him.
Our check reveals that the
family of one of the former
National Chairman of PDP,
Senator Ahmadu Ali is divided
between Modu Sheriff and the
National Caretaker Committee.
While Ahmadu Ali is one the
side of Senator Ahmed Makarfi,
his wife, Dr. Mariam Ali is one
of the secret backers of Modu
Sheriff.
Mrs. Ali has been desperate to
go to the Senate since the tenure of her husband as the National
Chairman but the ambition has
hit the rock severally. Though
her husband is from Kogi state,
the lady who is from Delta
North has been contesting for
PDP ticket in Delta State. Due to
the thin support she can garner
even within Delta PDP, she
never made it beyond the party
primaries.
It was gathered that she threw
her lot with Modu Sheriff with
the hope that if he is eventually
confirmed by the Courts as the
authentic National Chairman
her ambition to fly the PDP
Delta North Senatorial flag will
be fait accompli.
Controversial Anambra
politician, Chris Uba, who is
at logger-head with his elder
brother, Senator Andy Uba
over the control of the soul
of Anambra PDP, before the
Senator defected to the APC,
long ago pitched his tent with
Modu Sheriff for obvious
reasons. But when the table
months ago.
Former National Woman
Leader of PDP, Herberta
Okonofua, who is from Edo
State pitched her tent with
Modu Sheriff to actualize
her aspiration of becoming
the Deputy Governor of Edo
State. But the High Court
and Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC)
stopped her midway as they
refused to recognize the list
sent by Modu Sheriff to the
Edo election.
Ms Herberta Okonofua is
believed to have fruitlessly
prayed for Ize-Iyamu to be
victorious in the Court as
she is still confident that one
day one of the courts will
upturn the candidature of Ize-
Iyamu like the case between
Celestine Omehia and Rotimi
Amaechi in Rivers state.
Former President of the
National Council of Women
Societies, Ambassador
Bolere Ketebu has also been
identified as another secret
foot soldier of Modu Sheriff.
She and few others were at
Modu Sheriff’s private office
in Maitama, Abuja to pledge
their solidarity.
Another secret foot soldier
of Modu Sheriff is Dr. Kachi
Onaluju. His cover was
blown open one night when
he visited Modu Sheriff but
got a big shock when he saw
some journalists within the
premises. Some people are
of the view that Dr Onaluju,
who is an acolyte of Senator
Hope Uzodinma, has little
or no choice that the queue
behind Modu Sheriff since
his benefactor belongs to that
camp.
Now that the final battle
has been won and lost at
the Supreme Court political
observers are keeping close
tab on these secret footsoldiers
of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to
know their next line of action.
Will they go back and plead
allegiance to Ahmed Makarfi
or will they seek alternative
political platform? Only time
will tell.
appears to be turning against
Modu Sheriff in the High,
the younger Uba is seen less
with the embattled claimant
of the office of PDP National
Chairman.
Another secret backer of
Modu Sheriff is the immediate
past National Treasurer of
PDP, Bala Haruna. Though
Bala Haruna is believed by
many to be on the side of the
National Caretaker Committee,
his nocturnal visits to the Gana
Street, Maitama, Abuja, office
of Modu Sheriff has not gone
unnoticed.
Nigeria’s former High
Commissioner to the Gambia,
Ambassador Eshter Audu is
another secret foot soldier of
the embattled former governor
of Borno State. Ambassador
Esther Audu, who was a
former chairman of the Abuja
Municipal Area Council, was
noticed in the video of some
PDP chieftains that paid Modu
Sheriff solidarity visit somemonths ago.
