- DG promises $2500 per gold medal in Congo
Director General, National Sports Commission, NSC, Malam Alhassan Yakmut has explained that the N1000 being given to athletes everyday was only designed to last till the time successful athletes would eventually emerge.
Yamut who spoke exclusively to Nigerian Pilot Sports, however, assured of the commission’s readiness to reward any athlete who battle hard to grab Gold medal with immediate $2500 at the upcoming All Africa Games, AAG which kicks off September 4 in Congo.
Already, participating sports federations have mandated to conclude their trails on or before Thursday this week to pave way for proper concentration on selected athletes whose daily allowance would be increased.
According to Yakmut: “Camp allowance is not an investment. It’s motivation because if you put together the cost of accommodation and feeding, it’s four times more than what allowance is. As a matter of fact, there is nothing for the athlete to buy while in camp, everything has been provided. In amateur sport, such amount is reasonable.
“We don’t have any professional that is in this camp and if there is any, he or she must have accepted the condition of the camp because as far as we are concerned, we are following standard and if there is any athletes that flew his way into our camp, we are responsible for his return ticket.
“You cannot come here and declare yourself professional. We have the statistics of all the professional players and we are participating in this competition on the terms of amateurism. And we all know this era, there is no money. So nobody should come and bamboozle us with the fact that he plays professional if he or she is Professional. What is he/she doing in the amateur camp?” he asked
In the recent past, Team Nigeria came first in 2003 and have maintained second and third positions in the last five outings.
“Now that we are going to the 11th edition which is the 50 years of the game, I think we are going to make sure that we don’t go below first three positions. Our target is to be within the first and second position,” NSC DG added
