Gov wike

ON SATURDAY, November 11,
2017, security details attached to Rivers
State Governor, Barrister Nyesom
Wike and that of Minister of Transportation,
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi,
clashed at Nkpogu area of Port Harcourt,
the Rivers State capital.
Though reports have it that duo
were not actually involved in the
whole drama, the incident has
opened yet another can of political
war between the two Ikwerre-born
politicians, who are already spoiling
for war ahead of 2019.
This is not the first time the duo
will clash. In March, 2016, Wike and
Amaechi almost engaged in a physical
battle during the collation of legislative
rerun election results in the
state after the Ward 10 PHALGA Collation
Officer, Mrs. Ekwe Adebisa,
ran into the Mile One Police Station
for alleged safety.
The incident, as expected, has
paved way for another round of accusations
and counter-accusations by
both divide. In statements released
by both supporters of Wike and that
if Amaechi, they have all claimed
that was assassination attempt on
their principals by the opposing
side. Regrettably, this is contrary to
Police report on the incident.
According to the State Commissioner
of Police, CP Zaki Ahmed,
there was no assassination attempt
on either the Governor or the Minister
of Transportation as the incident
was a minor traffic infraction.
The CP, who briefed newsmen on
the incident in Port Harcourt, Monday,
said: “I have called this meeting
to clear the air on allegations
and counter allegations making the
rounds of alleged assassination plot
by two notable figures in the Country,
in the persons of His Excellency
Chief (Barr) Nyesom E. Wike, the Executive
Governor of Rivers State and
Rt. (Hon) Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi,
the Honourable Minister of Transportation,
following a minor traffic
infraction along Nkpogu roundabout,
Port Harcourt.
“That on 11/11/2017 at about
1500hrs at Nkpogu junction, while
the Hon. Minister of Transportation
was passing through Elekahia to Nkpogu
and at Nkpogu roundabout,
a Police outrider in the convoy of
His Excellency intercepted the Black
Lexus 750 Jeep the Minister was driving
just, as it was about negotiating
the roundabout. The outrider was
there to make way for the oncoming
convoy of His Excellency which was
about 400 metres away.

“Police Investigation report revealed
that two of the Minister’s convoy vehicles
were already ahead of him while
he was intercepted and stopped by the
outrider. It is not known how the outrider
fell off his Bike as dent marks on
the Lexus 750 Jeep were seen on the passenger’s
side of the car. A rowdy situation
now followed with the Minister
ferried by Security Agents away from
the scene of the incident. At this point,
the Governor’s convoy was not within
reach to the scene of this incident. The
Governor’s convoy eventually arrived
the scene without the presence of the
Hon. Minister,” he said.”
Continuing, the CP said, “I am aware
that some altercations did occur around
the scene of the incident. I wish to stress
here that, the lives of the two dignitaries
were not threatened as a result of
this minor traffic incident. It is of note
that, the meeting of the two convoys at
that point was coincidental and has no
semblance of threat to life or intention
to eliminate any person.
“The Governor later proceeded to
carry out a routine road inspection
within the State, while the Minister attended
the function that brought him
to Port Harcourt. I want to make this
abundantly clear that all acts touching
on misconduct by any Policemen in the
course of this incident will be thoroughly
Investigated and appropriate disciplinary
action taken against any person
found wanting.”
But in a press statement issued shortly
after the incident in Port Harcourt by
the Special Adviser to the Governor on
Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu,
the Rivers State government condemned
the incident, alleging assassination
attempt on the governor.
The statement read in part: “Rivers
State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike
on Saturday escaped assassination as
Special Anti-robbery Squad Operatives
and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in
the motorcade of the Minister of Transportation,
Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi
attacked his convoy. The governor who
was on project inspection was attacked
at Nwanja Junction on Trans-Amadi
Road.
“The SARs Personnel and Soldiers
in the Minister’s convoy hit down the
Governor’s Escort Rider and attacked
the policemen in the pilot car.
Mr Debewari , Aide -De- Camp, to
the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi
Amaechi, supervised the attack, which
included damage of cameras held by
journalists.
“Also part of the attack, was the
Commander of Rivers SARS, Mr Akin
Fakorede who received the Minister of
Transportation at the Port Harcourt International
Airport and accompanied
on his trip. Governor Wike was not
harmed, despite the attack. The Minister
of Transportation had over 50 SARS
Personnel, Soldiers and Mobile Policemen
in his motorcade.
Agajn, at a joint press conference in
Port Harcourt on Sunday, the People’s
Democratic Party, PDP, and the Grassroots
Democratic Initiative, GDI, stated
that the All Progressives Congress APCled
Federal Government should be held
responsible should anything happen to
the Governor.
Speaking during the press conference,
the two groups called on the international
community to call President
Muhammadu Buhari to order.
The Publicity Secretary of PDP in the
state, Hon. Samuel Nwanosike, said,
“This matter can never be swept under
the carpet. This is a clear assassination
attempt on the life of Governor Wike.
“The Federal Government should be
held responsible if anything happens to
Governor Wike. If SARS Commander,
Akin Fakorede and his men had behaved
the way the soldiers and DSS operatives
attached to Amaechi’s convoy
behaved, there wouldn’t have been any
problem yesterday (Saturday).”
Also speaking, President-General of
GDI, Hon. Bright Amaewhule, called
on Amaechi, who is also the immediate
past Governor of the state, to render an
apology to the people of the state over
the alleged attempt on Wike’s life.
Amaewhule said: “Governor Wike
is the symbol of Rivers State. We want
to call for an unreserved apology to the
people of Rivers State by the Minister of
Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi,
over the attempt to assassinate Governor
Wike.
“We appeal to the international community
to take this matter serious and
call President Muhammadu Buhari to
order because his ministers cannot be
terrorising their states of origin.”
On their part, the APC has insisted
that the incident was an attempt on the
Minister’s life. Chairman of APC in the
state, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, also
alleged that security operatives in the
convoy of the governor attempted to assassinate
the Minister.
Ikanya, in a statement issued in Port
Harcourt by his media aide, Eze Chukwuemeka
Eze, called for the arrest of
the Chief Security Officer CSO to Wike,
who he alleged pulled a gun on Amaechi.
Ikanya further stated that after the
failed attempt to kill the Minister, his
escort team was physically assaulted by
the CSO Government House SP Promise
with the FSARS operatives on the
Minister’s convoy dislodged and forcefully
disposed off of one of their AK 47
Rifles.
“This is a dangerous trend which if
not nipped in the bud and arrested may
jeopardise the current peace pervading
the Niger Delta region at the moment.
“The party in this regard, requests for
the immediate arrest and prosecution of
SP Promise Wosu and all his men before
Gov Wike succeeds to turn Rivers State
into a theatre of unwarranted war zone
only obtainable during the Omehia’s
era when Port Harcourt was rated as
the most risky place in the world”, the
statement read in part.
Furthermore, the Amaechi Media Office,
in their reaction stated that
the Minister’s car was vandalized
by the security details of the governor.
In their own account, the media team
stated, “In a blatantshow of naked raw
power, Minister of Transportation, Hon.
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi this afternoon
narrowly escaped being shot by
security men attached to the Governor
of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. His car
wasn’t that lucky though. The car was
vandalized with a broken side mirror.
“The Minister’s black jeep was intercepted
and blocked at the junction
by the security Motorcycle Outrider
attached to Wike after two cars had
passed through. One of the two cars had

security men assigned to protect the
minister in Port Harcourt. Suddenly,
gun-toting security men attached to
Wike’s convoy, surrounded the Minister’s
car, threatening to shoot him.
They hit the car, tried to smash the
windscreens, back and side windows
and broke a side mirror. All through
this attack, Amaechi remained calm,
inside the fortified Jeep.
While the attacked occurred, Wike
remained inside his vehicle.
“The Minister eventually passed
through after the intervention of the
security team on ground to protect
him in Port Harcourt. However,
when Governor Wike got to the point
where the incident occurred after
Amaechi’s vehicle had gone by, his
security men blocked the road again,
dragged out from a vehicle and thoroughly
beat up a police man attached
to protect Amaechi in Port Harcourt.
The Policeman’s riffle was also taken
from him.”
Again, a political pressure group of
supporters of Amaechi, under the aegis
of Inter-Ethnic Network for Chibuike
Rotimi Amaechi, INCRA, said
the trend if not checked will plunge
the state to another round of crisis.
A statement by its leader, Achor
Omodu, said, “INCRA is shocked at
the abortive assassination attempt by
Governor Wike’s outrider on the life
of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi,
Honourable Minister of Transportation
on Saturday, November 11,
2015.
“Having carefully considered the
gamut of the incident, we are convinced
beyond doubt that the incident
was a clear manifestation of the
Governor’s odium towards Amaechi
and an attempt to harm him. We are
therefore, befuddled at the laborious
attempts by the Governor’s media
aide to turn the facts of the matter on
its head and garner cheap sympathy
from the unknowing members of the
public.
“We are of the view that if this
high-level recklessness is allowed
to continue to fester beyond tolerable
limits, the State may be thrown
into unbearable tension and anarchy.
The Governor is advised to put the
people first before embarking on his
vendetta against his former boss and
benefactor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi
Amaechi.
“The Governor should quit seeking
undue attention and public sympathy.
He should realise that the only way
out of the public opprobrium which
he has thrown himself into is by delivering
quality governance to Rivers
People.”
