Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that all Nigerians reserve the right to freedom of worship, assuring that his administration will continue to create the enabling environment for all residents of Rivers State to practise their respective religions.
Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt when he received the Rivers Moslem Community that paid him a Sallah homage on Saturday, Governor Wike said what was important was for the adherents of different religions to work for the development of the country.
He said that in Rivers State, the Christian and Moslem communities were united in their commitment to peaceful co-existence and the growth of the state.
In his words: “Every Nigerian is entitled to the freedom of worship. What is important is for all of us to pray for the development of the nation. We need to pray for the resolution of the security challenges in the country.”
The governor called on the Muslim community to prevail on their children to stay away from crime, and assured the Muslim community that his administration would sponsor them for Hajj for spiritual upliftment, saying that the financial meltdown will not affect his commitment to the community. The governor agreed to intervene in the request of the Community to get Islamic Cemetery in Port Harcourt.
Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the Rivers State Muslim Community and Vice President, National Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Nasir Uhor, commended the governor for his commitment to the community.
Alhaji Uhor pleaded with the governor to prevail on Port Harcourt City Local Government Area to allocate cemetery for the Moslems to bury their dead.
In his choice of a new Chairman for the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Uhor observed that Governor Wike had displayed deep interest in their spiritual welfare, and commended the governor for setting up the State Pilgrims Welfare Board, and appointing credible Moslems to run the organization.
He then pledged the support of the Muslim Community to the programmes and policies of the administration and prayed Allah to bless the governor in particular and the state in general.
It will be recalled that the Moslems in Rivers state enjoy maximum protection in the state, and have not for once suffered any intimidation.
