Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina has been honoured with an award for outstanding performance from Women Gender Professional Multi- Purpose Cooperative Society.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Assistant Director of Information, FederalMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Malam Muhammad Idris and made available to Nigerian Pilot in Abuja.
The statement said the award was received from members of the association, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Director Food and Strategic Department, Dr. Jide Olumeko, thanked the visitors for the recognizing the minister’s positive achievements in transforming the agricultural sector in Nigeria.
Olumeko, who also received the award on behalf of the minister said, he was happy seeing women venturing in various aspects of agriculture.
He highlighted some of the achievements of Adesina as decentralization of the ministry to zones and states’ offices in the federation, introduction of Agriculture Transformation Agenda, ATA, the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme, GES programme which has its component as e- wallet where farmers receive messages through their mobile phones for redemption of farm inputs; and the the introduction of value chains, among others.
Earlier, while presenting the visitors, Director of Cooperatives, Dr Aslem Okolo stressed that women venturing in agric business is a welcome idea and deserves encouragement.
Okolo promised to promote their activities in his own capacity as the head of department of cooperative of the ministry.
Presenting the award to Adesina, Head of the delegation, Mrs. Mary Ewa, explained that the award was in recognition of the grand strides recorded by the minister in agriculture transformation and urged him to do more, especially in the area of women in agriculture.
Ewa informed that her members are in various aspects of agriculture such as fishery, animal production and many others.
Deputy Director, Youth and Gender in the ministry, Mrs. Babangida thanked the visitors as well as stakeholders in youth and gender initiative for their support to the ministry, stressing that women have been receiving positive encouragement in the agricultural sector from the minister.
She therefore assured that the ministry would continue to encourage women in agriculture in the country.
