Women of Obiangwu Autonomous Community in Ngor Okpala LGA, Imo State yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration in some villages of the community to protest the gruesome murder of their son and House of Assembly candidate of Labour Party, LP for Ngor Okpala constituency in the last general elections.
The aggrieved women, majority of whom were clad in black blouses, trooped out in their thousands and marched through the villages of the community chanting lamentations as well as curses on the killer(s) of their illustrious son, slain Andrew Ugwuezumba.
The protesters also marched to the Catholic Parish and other churches in the area where they laid their grievances before God and the priests while also visiting the traditional ruler, HRH Eze Samuel Odu.
Women Leader of Obiangwu Community, Mrs Rose Anyanwu who spoke to Nigerian Pilot yesterday during the protest disclosed that women of the area were highly vexed over the mindless murder of an enterprising son of the town by suspected assassins.
She said they were moved to embark on the demonstration by the growing anger and apprehension in the community over the dastardly incident especially as there were feelers that some forces were trying to conceal evidence and shield the culprits from the wrath of the law.
Mrs. Anyanwu who stated that the women had been fasting and praying for God’s intervention in exposing all that are involved in committing the hideous crime maintained that they will continue to cry to God and authorities of the state until justice was done.
Describing the heartless killing of Mr. Ugwuezumba as brazen assault on all the people of Obiangwu, she called on Imo State government, the police hierarchy and other authorities to put all machineries in motion to unravel and punish those behind the crime.
It would be recalled that suspected hired assassins had on the night of Tuesday, March 31, shot and killed the Labour Party House of Assembly candidate in Ngor Okpala Council, Mr Andrew Ugwuezumba few metres away from his home as he was returning from a political meeting.
