PERMANENT secretary, Federal
ministry of agriculture and rural
development Arc. Soony Echono has
express the determination of President
Muhammadu Buhari to end hunger
adding that government is focused on
identifying key actions that will guarantee
food security, social protection and a
vibrant agricultural sector that will assist
in breaking the cycle of rural poverty.
He said that the president’s major
agenda is to ensure the diversification of
the nation’s economy into the agricultural
sector and has directed the ministry of
agriculture to design areas to actualise the
set objectives.
The permanent secretary who stated
this in Abuja during the celebration
of World Food Day explained that the
problem Nigeria has in feeding the nation
is the increase in population with high
rate of unemployed youths adding that
the capacity in agricultural sector is not
enough to match up to the population.
He said that Nigerian’s current
agricultural policies seek to grow the
agricultural sector through focusing an
agricultural growth and national food
security with the private sector taking the
lead in a value chain approach especially
in areas where Nigeria has comparative
According to him “our ongoing efforts
are geared towards ensuring national
self-sufficiency in staple food such
as rice, wheat, fish, meat and dairy
products, resuscitating the cotton,
textiles and garment sector to
contribute to employment generation”
He said that plans are also afoot to
introduce a home grown National
Feeding programme to target the
valuable segments of our population
“the programme has the overall
objective of enhancing and sustaining
school enrollment, addressing poverty,
malnutrition and stunted growth,
creating business opportunities in our
rural areas, stimulating the growth of
micro, small and medium enterprises
and improving the incomes of our
