Nothing less than $50, 000, Fifty Thousand Dollars will be handed over to would-be Tennis Winners at the end of this year’s Tombim Abuja Open/International Tennis Federation, ITF futures events which is already underway in the Nation’s capital, Abuja. No fewer than 20 countries are participating.
The total price money will be won in two legs, with winners of each leg getting $25,000, Twenty-five thousand naira in a pulsating tournament which would end on April 30.
The ongoing championship which first served off in 2015 is at its second edition.
Like it is obtainable in other parts of the world, where professional Tennis competitions take place, several ranked-Tennis stars from various countries in Russia, Spain, United States, India, Germany, Australia, Egypt among others are currently sweating out at the well-designed Tennis court, located inside package B of Abuja National stadium with the aim of attaining new ATP points.
Their Nigerian counterparts who will equally battle for new heights in world Tennis are not left out in both Men’s singles and doubles after they obtained wild card to qualify for the main draws.
Giving further insight on the pro circuit competition at weekend in Abuja, tournament Director, Ikani Agabi revealed that up to 35 ATP points would be obtained at the end just as Winners of both legs have the potential of being ranked among top 500 in the world.
According to him; “the competition is borne out of a desire to provide opportunities for Nigerian players to collect vital ATP points and attract some of the best up and coming players in the world to play in Nigeria.
“The Organisers also want to use the competition to show that Nigeria is not as bad as it is portrayed around the world. We are honest, hardworking, friendly and peace-loving People who are very hospitable to foreigners.”
Earlier, President Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF Engr. Sani Ndanusa while commending the sponsors of the competition emphasized that facility upgrade has remained pivotal to why the ongoing event stands out.
He used the occasion to beckon on more private organizations to partner with the federation to deliver much more world class tournament.
Aside Tombim Abuja Open, NTF had organized or hosted annual CBN Tennis championship, Dala Hard court Open championship, Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC league, Africa Junior championship qualifier among others.
