Female coach, Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Purity Akuh has expressed confidence that the female wrestling team going for the Olympic qualifiers will secure the remain five slots available in the event scheduled for April in Alger, Algeria.
The female squad consists of Mercy Genesis (48Kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58Kg), Blessing Oborududu (63Kg), Hannah Reuben (69Kg) and Blessing Onyebuchi (69Kg).
Having qualified for the Olympics, Odunayo Adekuoroye (53Kg) will only accompany the team to Algeria. A confident Purity said with the calibre of wrestlers possessed by the country he is sure nothing short of the available 5 slots will be won by Nigeria.
He said the team resumed five days after returning from the African championship held Egypt noting that the morale of the girls is high.
Speaking on the consistency of the girls, the coach have this to say “if you could recall, the female team at the 2015 All Africa Games won 4 gold and 2 silver and just this month in Egypt at the 2016 African championship they defied all odds by winning 3 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. I am confident that Nigeria will represent Africa in all the female categories at the 2016 Olympic games”.
He added that training has been on and the girls have been motivated by both the coaches and the technical crew.
The coach, however, said he expects stiffer competition from other African countries but expressed optimism that the wrestlers will be victorious.
