Minister of Sports and Youths Development, Solomon Dalung has come hard on various sporting bodies and federation, accusing them of staying dormant without any meaningful effort to galvanise non-government support.
Dalung, who particularly pointed at the leadership of Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, and Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, insisted that lack of initiatives by relevant sports stakeholders has hindered needed growth within the sector.
The former local government chairman also lambasted self-centered individuals that have vowed to continue obstructing peace and progress in various federations and called for calm in a bid to achieve expected development.
Last month, the board members of Nigeria Taekwondo Federation successfully impeached their president, Gbenga Ashiru, after leveling gross misconduct accusations against him, yet the removed number one man has refused to give way.
Also, Amb. Chris Giwa-led football group announced their readiness to storm Glasshouse, headquarters of NFF last Tuesday, and take over the country’s football leadership. But for the intervention of sports minister, there would have been chaos currently within the nation’s soccer domain.
“I don’t know why there are continued problems here and there within Nigeria sports. If there is anything that sells faster in our sports, it’s trouble or crisis. Nigerian sports have domesticated crisis.
“There is so much of personal vested interest in almost all the federations. People see the federations as their own property. Why must it be so? Some will go as far as telling us that FIFA is around the corner.
“If they need money, FIFA won’t be there to bring it or they can’t provide it themselves. They will run to the government for virtually everything they need yet when there is need for government to intervene, they will tell us FIFA won’t permit any interference.
“Why would stakeholders’ not put heads together to solve problems that are with us. Look for ways of partnering with corporate organisations or individuals and source for funds; instead, they will be fomenting trouble. Any little thing, everybody will run to government.
“Government’s role in sports is to compliment and not to provide all the monies,” Dalung hinted.
